Installing IBM Monitoring 8.1 on CentOS 6.6

Since IBM Monitoring 8.1 server is only supported on RHEL 6 I have attempted to install the product on the CentOS equivalent of RHEL 6. I used CentOS version 6.6 which can be downloaded from here.

Try assigning at least 8 gigabytes of memory for your VM. I attempted the installation on a 4 gig VM and it went painfully slow as it was swapping all the time. Select the desktop installation option when installing CentOS that image has most of the required packaged already. Additionally you will need to yum install the following packages:

  • yum install ksh
  • yum install gcc
  • yum install pam.i686

Before starting the installation turn off the prereq checker as it will fail your installation due to an “unsupported” platform.

export SKIP_PRECHECK=1

Stop the local firewall if running:

  • service iptables save
  • service iptables stop

You will also need to make sure that your hostname and ip address is defined in /etc/hosts otherwise the installation will fail.

The installation is pretty much done automatically. You will have to specify the apmadmin user password at some point and select if you want to pre-configure agent packages. I set the password but unselected the agent package pre-configuration I will do this step later manually.

The installer then kicks in and installs DB2, Websphere and the required ITM packages such as the Summarization and Pruning agent. it also installs support for all agents it could possibly connect to the server. The list of these agent and their images can be found here. Once the core installation is done it will create the required DB2 databases, then starts and configures the server.

To start the installation go to the directory where you unpacked the server bundle to and execute the following:

root@huim001-p1 server]# ./install.sh

All server components were successfully configured.

Agent installation images must be pre-configured to connect to this server.
Use the /opt/ibm/ccm/make_configuration_packages.sh and /opt/ibm/ccm/configure_agent_images.sh scripts to pre-configure the agent images. Note that if you are installing Hybrid Gateway, that image must also be configured using the same scripts.

The server size has been configured as ‘extra_small’ based on the number of CPUs, amount of memory and free disk space. To reconfigure the server size, run script /opt/ibm/ccm/server_size.sh with the desired size as a parameter. Valid sizes are: extra_small, small, medium.
Please review the documentation at http://ibm.biz/mon_doc for more information.
To begin using the product, copy the pre-configured agent images to the systems running the applications you want to monitor and install the agents. Log in to the Performance Management console using https://<server-name>:9443 and review the topics on the “Getting Started” page.

After the installation just go to http://localhost:8080 and the IBM Monitoring APM console 8.1 should open.

Please note that this only covers the installation, the product was not tested on CentOS any further ( yet ).

Installing the IBM Tivoli Integration Composer

This article will help you install the IBM Tivoli Integration Composer. As usual we will use SLES 11 SP3 as an installation OS. We used 6 gigabyte of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 50 gigabytes of disk space in this scenario.

Start the installation from /Install/ITIC/setup.bin command from the IBM Control Desk root installation directory. You need to have java installed in order to be able to start the installation process. We recommend to use the java that is supplied with Control Desk and it is located in /app/IBM/SMP/sdk/ directory in our environment.

HUCTRLDSK001-P1:/Downloads/TIVOLI-IMAGES/CONTROLDESK753/Install/ITIC # ./setup.bin

Please note that Integration Composer is very sensitive on the java versions. If you have Oracle java or a different version if might not work with it properly.

Integrating TADDM and Control Desk using Integration Composer

In this example we will use the Integration Composer to get CMDB data out from TADDM and populate that data into Control Desk’s CMDB. We are basically setting up data translation between TADDM and Control Desk’s CMDB.

We will have the following steps:

  1. Create data source for TADDM CIType ( Configuration Item )
  2. Create data source for TADDM Actual CI ( Configuration Item )
  3. Create target data source for Control Desk CIType ( Configuration Item )
  4. Create target data source for Control Desk Actual CI ( Configuration Item )
  5. Create mappings between TADDM CIType and Control Desk CIType
  6. Create mapping between TADDM Actual CI and TADDM Actual CI
  7. Run executeMapping.sh on the CIType mapping to populate the Control Desk CIType database
  8. Activate CIs Types on Control Desk
  9. Run executeMapping.sh on the Actual CI mapping to populate the Control Desk Actual CI database

Before we start the procedure we will copy the taddm api files to the ./lib directory in the Integration Composer root directory.

scp platform-model.jar root@huctrldsk001-p1:/app/IBM/Integration_Composer/lib/
Password:

Make sure that the JAVA_PATH variable is set correctly in the init.sh file. We used the java version that comes with the Control Desk installation.

Activate CIs Types on Control Desk

Log in to your Control Desk console and navigate to Administrator->CI Types

sccd-ci-types

It is important to point out here that you should only activate a very small number of CI Types at first then try to expand the list later on. We only enabled the Linux system specific Configuration Item Types such as:

  • SYS.LINUX.LINUXUNITARYCOMPUTERSYSTEM
  • SYS.UNITARYCOMPUTERSYSTEM
  • SYS.COMPUTERSYSTEM
  • SYS.LINUX.LINUX

sccd-ci-activationYou can Activate a CI by selecting it then clicking on the Change Status option in the left menu.

Installing and Configuring IBM Control Desk Service Provider Edition V7.5.3

This article will help you install and configure IBM Control Desk Service Provider Edition V7.5.3. As usual we will use SLES 11 SP3 as an installation OS. We used 6 gigabyte of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 50 gigabytes of disk space in this scenario.

We downloaded the following packages from Passport Advantage:

  • IBM SmartCloud Control Desk V7.5.1 TDI Integrations Multiplatform Multilingual (CI9CWML )
  • IBM Control Desk Service Provider Edition V7.5.3 for Linux Multilingual (CN2HNML )
  • Tivoli Middleware Installer Images V7.5.0.2, 1 of 3 for Linux x86-64 Multilingual (CI913ML )
  • Tivoli Middleware Installer Images V7.5.0.2, 2 of 3 for Linux x86-64 Multilingual (CI5JBML )
  • Tivoli Middleware Installer Images V7.5.0, 3 of 3 for Linux x86-64 Multilingual (CZX5JML )
  • IBM DB2 Server V10.5 for Linux on AMD64 and Intel EM64T systems (x64) Multilingual (CIK9IML )
  • IBM DB2 ESE Restricted Use, Quick Start and Activation V10.5 for Linux, UNIX and Windows Multilingual (CIK0LML )

We will use the Middleware installer to install & configure the middleware for us. Once all products installed we will gradually upgrade and distribute the middleware components across multiple servers. The middleware installer will install the following software and versions:

  • DB2 9.7
  • WepSphere Application Server Network Deployment 7.0.0.17
  • IBM Tivoli Directory Server 6.3
  • IBM HTTP Server 7.0.0.17

Before the installation we perform the following steps:

Set environment variable for mwi_launchpadroot. This will set the installation location of the installer. Our setting was like this:

export mwi_launchpadroot=/Downloads/TIVOLI-IMAGES/CONTROLDESK753/

Raise the OS open file limit to 8192 by adding the following 2 files:

root hard nofile 8192
root soft nofile 8192
to
/etc/security/limits.conf

Once the file is modified and saved reboot the system for the settings to take effect. Please note that you must have root access to perform this installation.

Installing the Middleware

The middleware installation is started with the setupLinux64.sh command from ./Install/MWI directory if the Control Desk installation media. Alternatively you can use the launchpad application to execute this installation script.

HUCTRLDSK001-P1:/Downloads/TIVOLI-IMAGES/CONTROLDESK753/Install/MWI # ./setupLinux64.sh

Installing Control Desk

Once the Middleware is installed we are ready to install the IBM Control Desk Service Provider Edition. Before you start the installation it is important to know that all configuration values will be validated once the Next button is clicked so there should be know unexpected surprises once the physical installation process starts. You will see the Validating inputs dialog a lot during configuration specification.

control-desk-service-provider-edition-installer-validating-inputs

The installation process does take a very long time. Let the installer finish its procedure. It is not uncommon the the installation is running for more than 8 hours. If you have to stop the installation procedure for some reason, you can resume the installation using taskrunner utility. The utility is located in your control desk installation directory under scripts. Run the following command to continue a halted installation:

./scripts/taskRunner.sh CONTINUE

We start the installation using the command line installer instead of the launchpad. The installer is located in ./Install/ISM directory.

control-desk-service-provider-edition-installer-pre-install-summaryThe installation have 15 stages ( tasks ) and as I pointed out before it will take a very long time. Stage 6 ( Task 6 )  when the Database configuration is happening is a notoriously long process for example. Therefore it is good to use a utility that checks the real time load on your server for example top or htop if you like more visualized results. This way you can see if the installer is actually doing its job.

control-desk-service-provider-edition-installer-stagesUpon successful completion you should see the following screenshot.

control-desk-service-provider-edition-installation-completedOpen your browser and type the following URL to get to the maximo console:

http://yoursccdhost/maximo

The admin user is maxadmin and use the password you have specified at installation time. If you are not able to log in right after the installation, you will need to restart the server and start up the components one by one. This usually solves the initial login issues for me.

Step by Step Installing & Configuring Netcool/OMNIbus EIF probe for Omnibus 8.1

This article will describe, how to install and configure the Netcool/OMNIbus EIF probe that comes with the 8.1 version of Netcool/OMNIbus. As usual we will use SLES 11 SP3 as host OS.

Netcool/OMNIbus 8 Plus Probe for Tivoli EIF provides the capability to capture events sent from ITM and forward them onto the Omnibus console. It is not to be confused with IBM Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus Gateway for Tivoli EIF which is used to forward events from IBM Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus to applications that accept events in EIF format.

First locate the Netcool/OMNIbus 8 Plus Probe for Tivoli EIF (nco-p-tivoli-eif 13_0) Multiplatform English (CN1FVEN ) package on Passport Advantage, if you do not have it downloaded already. Make sure that you download the one that is coming with the 8.1 version of Omnibus.

Installing Netcool/OMNIbus 8 Plus Probe for Tivoli EIF

From version 8.1 probe installation is being done using the IBM Installation Manager not with the nco_install_integration utility.

Start the IBM Installation Manager using the IBMIM command. Usually this is located in /opt/IBM/InstallationManager/eclipse directory. Once started go to File-> Preferences.

IBM_Installation_Manager_propertiesSelect Add repository. Specify the location of the repository.config file in the EIF probe image directory. This will add that location to the repository list.

IBM_Installation_Manager_add_repositoryClick install on the main screen to start the installation.

IBM_Installation_Install_startingSelect Netcool/Omnibus Probe nco-p-tivoli-eif then click next.

IBM_Installation_Install_select_packageAccept the License agreement, then click next at the Install packages window. If your prerequisites are not met you will see a list of missing package groups.

IBM_Installation_Install_Install_packagesConfirm the installation package by clicking next and the following window.

IBM_Installation_Install_confirmClick Install to start the installation at the next window.

IBM_Installation_Install_buttonIf everything goes fine your installation should now be done.

Installing the Situation Update Forwarder

The Situation Update Forwarder is located on the IBM Tivoli Monitoring tools CD, the latest version can be downloaded from fixcentral. In this example I am using the the tools package from ITM 6.3 Fixpack 4:

  • 6.3.0-TIV-ITM_TMV-Tools-FP0004

After unpacking the image the installation can be started using the ESync3000Linux.bin command.

Situation_update_forwarder_welcomeAfter accepting the License Agreement select the installation location of the Situation Update Forwarder the click Next.

Situation_update_forwarder_select_install_locationLeave the setting on default in the following window then click Next.

Situation_update_forwarder_settingsAdd the login credentials for your ITM server in the next pane. Remember situation update forwarder changes events on TEP once they are modified on the Omnibus console, however if you change ( acknowledge for example ) an event in ITM. The change will not be synchronized into Omnibus.

Situation_update_forwarder_itm_settings Click Next at the following pane and the installation starts immediately. If everything goes fine you should see the following window:

Situation_update_forwarder_finish

Execute Situation Update Forwarder SQL scripts on Omnibus

Configuring Netcool/OMNIbus 8 Plus Probe for Tivoli EIF

  • Copy the itm_event.rules file from the omnibus directory of the Situation Update Forwarder installation location to $OMNIHOME/probes/linux2x86/
  • Uncomment the itm_event.rules include definition in tivoli_eif.rules
    located in $OMNIHOME/probes/linux2x86

# This is the generic ITM situation handling. This may get modified if
# later include files are used. Must be included if the predictive or
# virtualization include lines are

include “itm_event.rules”

Make Netcool/OMNIbus 8 Plus Probe for Tivoli EIF start with Process Agent ( PA )

What is Process Control System and Process Agent?

“The process control system runs external procedures that are specified in automations. Automations detect changes in the ObjectServer and run automated responses to those changes. It also manages local and remote processes. Use process control to configure remote processes in order to simplify the management of Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus components such as ObjectServers, probes, and gateways. The process control system consists of Process agents, which are programs installed on each host for managing processesand  A set of command-line utilities that provide an interface to process management.”

We use this to manage every probe / gateway running on our Omnibus server. Repeat the following steps to configure the Process Agent to manage Netcool/OMNIbus 8 Plus Probe for Tivoli EIF:

Start the Administration Console using the nco_config command in $OMNIHOME/bin/

netcool_process_agent_gui

Log in to your process agent using the OS user id and password.

netcool_process_agent_login

Click on New process from the drop down menu after right clicking on Core:

process_agent_create_processDefine the location of the nco_p_tivoli_eif executable, then click OK.

starting_process_process_agent

Start the nco_p_tivoli_eif process using the drop down menu.

process_agent_start_probeIf everything was configured properly you should see something similar.

process_agent_started_probe

Start the Situation Update Forwarder

If you would like to have synchronization between TEP and Omnibus you can run the Situation Update Forwarder. It is important to point out that this is not required for proper event forwarding from ITM to Omnibus, only required if you would like to have your changes done on Omnibus to be synched down to TEP. You can run SUF with the following command:

../SitForwarder/bin/StartSUF.sh

ITM Windows OS Agent slows down periodically

We recently ran into an issue with one of our deployed ITM Windows OS agents. The problem was that the agent slowed down a few times a day. This means that sometimes it took minutes for the data to show up on TEP. When we checked the Windows OS Agent logs we found the following error repeating:

(54475515.0002-27BC:knt67agt.cpp,284,”TakeSample”) remoteFailureCount
(5447551A.0000-27BC:knt67agt.cpp,949,”ipToHostname”) gethostbyaddr error . Exiting
(5447551A.0001-27BC:knt67agt.cpp,283,”TakeSample”) ipToHostName failure for IP: 114.106.84.40

We then added the following parameters to the windows OS agent environment file which has solved the issue:

NT_LOG_THROTTLE=1
NT_PERFMON_MEMORY_CHECK=1
REVERSE_LOOKUP_ACCEPTED_FAILURES=10

Very likely the DNS resolution problems caused the agent to wait for the hostnames to be resolved therefore it was hanging until it got a timeout.

Change DB2 database port/user/password for maxdb75 – Control Desk 7.5.1

We had a requirement today to change the default port ( 50005 ) of the DB2 server on the Control Desk box. Control desk stores this configuration data in the maximo.properties file which is normally located in ./SMP/maximo/applications/maximo/properties/ directory. This file is encrypted as it also stores the userid and password for maxdb75 database. The following steps have to be performed to change the port or any other setting properly:

– Copy original properties file ( maximo.properties_orig ) from ./SMP/etc/ to ./SMP/maximo/applications/maximo/properties/
– Rename maximo.properties to maximo.properties.old
– Rename maximo.properties_orig to maximo.properties
– Edit maximo.properties file. We changed the default port to 60000. Don’t forget to update the password field to the current password.

mxe.encrypted=true
mxe.db.url=jdbc:db2://ussccd1-p1.ipm.local:60000/maxdb75
mxe.db.driver=com.ibm.db2.jcc.DB2Driver
mxe.rmi.port=0
mxe.db.schemaowner=maximo
mxe.db.password=CHANGETHISVALUE
mxe.db.user=maximo
mxe.registry.port=13400
mxe.name=MXServer

– Encrypt the configuration file using the encryptproperties.sh usually location in ./SMP/maximo/tools/maximo

Once this procedure is done you will have to repackage the configuration file in properties.jar located in ./WebSphere/AppServer/profiles/ctgAppSrv01/installedApps/ctgCell01/MAXIMO.ear

– Copy the configuration.jar file to a temporary location
– unpack the configuration.jar file using the jar utility. There will be several version of this on your server so just look for it and use whichever is convenient.
– Run the following command /yourjarlocation/jar -xvf properties.jar
– Copy the maximo.properties file to the temporary directory and overwrite the extracted version
– Pack the jar file back to /yourjarlocation/jar -cvf properties.jar
– Copy the new properties.jar file to it’s original location: ./WebSphere/AppServer/profiles/ctgAppSrv01/installedApps/ctgCell01/MAXIMO.ear

Now restart the WebSphere application server and your changes should be done.

If you happen to use Integration Composer you also have to change the database settings on the Control Desk Console in the following menu:

System Configuration -> Platform Configuration -> System Properties

Also change the port in the fusion.properties file which is located in the Integration Composer root directory under ./data/properties:

mxe.db.url=jdbc:db2://localhost:60000/maxdb75
